PHYSICAL THERAPY FOR CLIMBERS & SURFERS

Whether you are a novice or a professional athlete we meet you where you are and help you learn how to train harder, surf longer and increase the time doing what you love.

WHY WORK WITH US?

Why surfers choose us:

Accurate diagnosis

Surfing is a sport of consistent repetitive movements and positions. Many locations where surfers feel pain, and how long it takes them to recover, can be improved if their treatment plan is accurate. We accurately differentiate common diagnoses that can appear like the other. For example, a neck issue can look like “swimmer’s shoulder” or a back issue can look like a problem that limits hip mobility popping up onto the next wave. As the only certified McKenzie clinic in the region we don't just treat symptoms, we treats the source, so you are injury free, not “working through it.” For more information about the McKenzie method at our clinic click here.

Recovery of Function

Given the repetitive nature of movements that are required for surfing, a sport specific program is essential for longer days on tougher waves. A common limitation in a surfer being able to return to their sport is not building the capacity to surf at the clinic. As a result, odds increase that the transition from clinic to gym or the water allows the problem to persist. By using revolution balance boards with sensory motor training in clinic, we are able to specifically assess and treat, and get our clients back to do what they love, pain free.

Services we provide for surfers:

  • Paddling and pop up assessment and restoration following injury

  • Hands on treatment only to increase self treatment to keep you surfing while you are recovering, versus needing to stop your sport during recovery

  • Injury assessment, to correction and modification of posture and poses, to allow the right environment for healing, while improving load management throughout neck, shoulder and back

  • Warm ups and cool downs to do on the beach, optimizing surfing specific function and keeping the body injury free

Why climbers choose us:

Accurate diagnosis

By utilizing the McKenzie method, athletes that previously were told to pause doing their sport, or even worse, to quit their sport, are able to rehabilitate from their injuries with Take Control Physical Therapy’s accurate assessment and treatment plan. Our therapists don’t treat symptoms, they treats the source so you are injury free not “working through it”.

Proven track record

Prior to starting Take Control Physical Therapy’s location in Northeastern Florida, Andrew had extensive training with, and provided exceptional treatment through, Grassroots Physical Therapy of SLC, Utah. Grassroots Physical Therapy is founded by Esther Smith PT, DPT, Cert. MDT, an avid climber and exceptional therapist to Black Diamond athletes. Esther hired, mentored and worked with Andrew Merget while he treated Grassroots rock climbing clients, from amateur to professional, for 15 months.

Recovery of Function

We have a practice wall and hangboard in the clinic to assess and retrain movement patterns specific to climbing. We understand body movement such as core activation, shoulder girdle control, hand strength (pulleys and tendons) and physics as it relates specifically to the sport. We can help whether you are recovering from injury, looking to tune up for that trip out West, or finding the next step in order to train harder and send at the climbing gym.

Prevention

All plans focus on the goal of reducing the likelihood of repeating the same injury over and over again, since many injuries can be episodic for climbers. Our climber treatment plans focus on prevention of injury, with education and stretches to promote the right environment for recovery, so our clients can not only climb harder, but for longer.

“Andrew has been my PT for my many injuries; acute and chronic, head to toe (literally)… Andrew is truly brilliant at what he does. I am a high level athlete, and he has helped me to heal and understand injuries that I have dealt with for 15 years… 10/10 would recommend!”
